Sharing Couch 1 : Social Entrepreneurship Summit

Was invited today to attend Social Entrepreneurship Summit , organized by Future Competency seminars & events .  Here is sharing with you a few points from my notes . Would be glad to have your reflections :


Mr. Ramesh Ramanathan
The Founder and Chairman of Janalakshmi, he has a proven track record in addressing many of the issues faced by urban India. He possesses an Honors degree in Physics from BITS Pilani, and an MBA from Yale University’s School of Management. He has co-authored the book “Urban Poverty Alleviation in India,” and is a champion for the advocacy of poverty-related and public governance issues.

 Dr John Demartini

has over 39 years of experience in educating individuals, corporate teams and leaders. Founder of Demartini Institute which has developed methodologies and action steps to help break through whatever is in the way of taking your life to the next level of success, offers 72 different curriculum. Has read close to 30000 books & authored 40 books . Reading , researching , teaching , travelling ( 360 days / year ) are his passions .

Jeff Slayter

Mr. Ramesh Ramanathan
With examples of his decision on marriage & of leaving career to come back to India , made following points for success :

-Importance of high clarity on what one wants ( to know what is most important priority in life )

-Sheer application . Persistently pursue the most important priority in life .

-Positivity : There always be a mix of 20:20:60 of good : bad: Indifferent people anywhere . You have a choice between complaining or doing something ; see  ‘ What I can do ‘

Dr John Demartini

Spoke about identifying & pursuing inner desire / highest value:

-There is no dearth of opportunity or money if you have a desire to serve humanity

-For sustainable enterprise , need to get out of comfort zone & explore & expand horizons

-To pursue intrinsic value / highest value ( when you see Cause  > Obstacle ) , one doesn’t need to be driven externally or reminded to do . For extrinsic value — something low on priority for the person , he / she needs to be pushed , cajoled — needs external motivation ( A child doesn’t need to be cajoled into playing video games but often requires push for doing home work )

– Accessing the inner core / desire helps access vitality , energy  . In pursuing the inner desire a person endures all the pain , efforts .

-While pursuing inner desire , there will be people who’d support & those who’d challenge . For progress , both elements are essential .

-In the areas of your inner desire / highest value , you are an entrepreneur , innovator / creator . In fact instead of spending significant amounts on in search of innovations , Organisations are better advised to find & employ people whose highest value ( passion ) is aligned with organizational goals & let them pursue their desire — they will innovate .

-Successful entrepreneurs do 3 things : (i) Unflinching dedication to cause ( they take it as divine order / destiny , without option ) (ii) Raise the bar in serving the cause (iii) Meaningful exchange of value : Find people who will be inspired by the output of Entrepreneur’s pursuit of his / her inspiration .

– It’s when we do not find our inner magnificence ( not pursue inner desire ) is when we are obligated to work for what others want us to do .

Jeff and Kane

Spoke on essential points to become a successful social entrepreneur :

-For people to do business with you – (i) Dress well (ii) Engage people (iii) Need to be interesting / fun for people to be associated with you (iv) Partner with best in class (v) Give ahead of asking , to influence

-To make money globally , think globally

-Be out in the front ( positional advantage ) for visibility

-What you teach – you become

-Money is more units of choice

-A social entrepreneur does not see what it is , but what it can be

-Engage ALL your resources , not just money ( importance of involvement & commitment )

-What you put your attention to – expands

-When people pay , they pay attention  ( no value when it is free )

– Successful social entrepreneurs : (i) Engage everybody (ii) Keep it consistent (iii ) Make it a part of everyday strategy

Pearls -1 :Eye for We

With this I wish to start a new section , which will be our space for sharing quick wisdom lines , realisations , quotes — some mine , some yours , some hearsay .

Here is the inaugural one on  Eye for We ( I  v/s  We ) Much has been said about cultivating ‘ We ‘ more than ‘ I ‘ & various ways have been prescribed to achieve this & various stories shared to highlight its virtues .

But nothing beats this , which I recently heard from one of my colleagues , which is much more striking in highlighting the difference , than whatever I’ve heard before . This is obviously borrowed , not my original ; but am very proud to share from my Blog . It says ….

See what great difference it makes to life when you substitute I by We , in the word  ‘ Illness  ‘   —- it takes you to the other end of the spectrum in  ‘ Wellness  ‘      — WOW  ! 

Coaching Reflections : Creating Awareness

I plan to bring in here in this fortnightly column Thoughts , Learning , Observations on different aspects of coaching — some of my own & some via interactions / reflections with my colleagues & friends . In effect , it’s the essence of what I understand — made available to wider audience
Today , I start with thoughts on Awareness — something very core to a coaching process
  • Acting without being aware is like taking medication without diagnosing medical condition .
  • Awareness is knowing (i) Who you are , (ii) Where are you currently (iii) What do you want to do in life , (iv) How would you like to go about it
  • It’s delving deeper into self , beyond the superficiality of understanding . It’s being in closer touch with self – much like the ‘ consciousness ‘ concept in spirituality
  • Awareness is not restricted to physicality or the external elements ; it is importantly more holistic  . Ancient Vedic concept of awareness is “ I’m aware when I’m not thinking “ as against conventional Western concept of “ I think , therefore I’m “
  • Process of meditation / any related mechanism to bring in awareness is like allowing the pot filled with muddy water time for sedimentation , whereby the dust settles down separating from water , leaving it clam & clear .
  • Since solution is where the problem is ; Coaching process helps client to seek a solution within . For him / her to do this requires self awareness for the client . A coach is better prepared to help client’s process of self awareness , provided he’s progressed adequately on his own ‘ self awareness ‘
  • A coach can help client’s self awareness process via :
    • Effacing himself from the situation ….. not imposing own view point , experience , judgment or perspective . In fact a Coach will need to work form the Client’s context
    • Not offering ‘ Advice ‘ . Advising not only assumes a pre supposed context ( which may be wrong ) but also has a ‘ Superior – Inferior ‘ level of equation . It can make the client overtly conscious of his / her ‘ shortcomings ‘ which may create guilt feel & get client stuck in the past than moving forward . In a way , ‘Advising ‘ approach in coaching can be inadvertently negative .
    • Give feedback – like showing a mirror .. neither adding nor deleting any thing form reality nor adding any value judgment / interpretation colour  . A good feedback can help a client get useful insights & a different perspective
    • Ask potent questions … it’s like digging ( efficiently ) with a sharper tool till you reach a fresh water spring in the ground


What is the role of a manager , or anyone with a supervisory role responsibility ; is a common question  . I’m sure there will be a good number of right answers in classical management theory , but to me , there is only one answer . Essential purpose of a managerial responsibility is to  ‘ Add Value ‘ — making a positive change .  If things are different & better because of & with you ; you’ve added value . If on the other hand , things are no different with or without you , you’re irrelevant to the context .

Today we do not need human skills to  maintain ‘ status quo’  . Things which are of routine nature & indifferent to human intervention can be easily ‘ automated  ‘ in a much disciplined & efficient way . Today we need managers who can make a ( positive ) change  , those who can drive things , those who can influence destinies & shape lives ! Quite simply , if you can’t make a difference , organizations can run without you . Your existence is defined not by the title you carry , but by the difference you make  !

Adding value is an all pervasive concept –applies to life in general  . You can add value to a person , to a product / service , to a process …to almost anything & anybody who you come in contact with ( & no body stops you from expanding your domain ! ) you can add value to people via knowledge, skills ; to process by making it more simple / effective or cost efficient , you can add value to product , customer , quality , company image etc .  – that’s the Midas touch management is looking for  ; that’s what sets one manager apart from another , an achiever from a non performer .

It calls for persistent application , , investment of time & skills , an inner drive & above all an incessant passion to make a difference . It takes a supreme belief in self that one can make a difference & a sense of purpose that one OUGHT to make a difference .

Today organizations are no longer happy with just ‘ Surviving ‘ . The race is to excel , to be right at the top .  Today adding value , is no longer ‘ icing on cake ‘ –it’s the Cake , it’s the soul of existence . I’d put it as a most prime managerial obligation !

Adding value is what each of us can ( & need to ) do to each other …which is what parents can do to their progenies ; friends can do to friends , spouses can do to each other , …. you don’t have to be even related to some one to add value . Don’t you add value to some stranger’s morning by flashing a smile !

Imagine if we help each other improve , do better , share the skills & knowledge we’ll only push the collective ability levels much higher , joys can be multiplied & the world can be better enriched & equipped . All of this doesn’t have to cost always .

To me therefore ‘ Adding value ‘ is a human value , a basic obligation we’ve to ourselves & to those we connect with .

I’m very happy to see you here & want you to feel at home  !

I feel obligated & elated at the same time to inaugurate my new blog under the Value Enhancer title — which happens to be its founding purpose .

I’ve always worked with the conviction throughout my 26 +years of Corporate career & almost twice as much of a life journey , that the best purpose for any pursuit — which cuts across any initiative in any domain — is to  ” ADD VALUE  ”  . One can add value to Product , Person , Process …. to almost anything ( P or not to P , is not the question ! ) If the aspect / object / event , I am associated with is different & better because of  me , then I have added value . If it’s unchanged with or without me , then I’m irrelevant to the context .

The whole purpose of a life journey is about enhancement , beginning with self .  The incessant urge is to be a ‘ better person ‘ tomorrow than what I’m today ; every day , starting today . If we can achieve this , everything else will fall in place 

With this conviction , all that I do — whether Coaching , Consulting , Teaching , Writing , Development workshops — is to do with ‘ Enhancement Space ‘  . I proudly call myself as a Value Enhancer in what must be a rarer if not unique title . My recent graduation as a Professional Certified Coach ( PCC ) is a conscious reinforcement in that direction .

I promise to augment my blog site regularly ( at least fortnightly ) with thoughts , notes , experiences which will bring in a value add under different sections : Coaching , Consulting , Management , Development initiatives etc .

Above all , I’m a strong believer & practitioner of  Collaboration …. I’ve done that even with what people conventionally refer to as competition.
